We understand from our representative
that Messrs. Fergusson and Company of Chefoo are connected with your house in business being your representatives in Weihaiwei.
Me bave a consignment of goods ready to send to Weihaiwei which Messrs: Fergusson and Company are most arious to receive, as part of it consists of Revolvers intended for the Officers and men of the 1st. Chinese Regiment commanded by Colonel Bower, the remainder are sporting cartridges for Mr. lake's own personal use.)
We are unable to ship direct to Messrs. Fergusson and Company so have taken the liberty to ship same to you and would ask you to receive and forward on our behalf and to charge freight forward from Hongkong.
We have sent an Invoice to Messrs.
Fergusson and Company and enclose a duplicate for your information, and in case it should be required for presentation at the Customs. le bave received notice from our Shipping Agents in London that Revolvers only have as yet been forwarded and that they await permission from the Foreign Office to ship Cartridges.
We understand from Major Higgs however
that our shipment of Cartridges need not be landed at your port except in bond, if required on Stonecutters' Island, from whence one of your ships (calling at Weibaiwei) would remove the goods. In this way expense will be saved to Messrs. Fergusson and Company.
Should any local restrictions prevent
your forwarding, kindly hold the shipment pending instructions from Messrs. Fergusson and Company to whom please write.
