same month by Mr. L. A. Ozorio on the usual terms of
probation, at a salary of $40 a month. Mr. Ozorio proved
unsatisfactory and on the 29th. of June, at the end of
his term of probation, I dispensed with his services. The
vacancy so created remained for a time unfilled. But on
the 1st. of August, Miss Ethel Long was appointed to the
temporary clerkship on the same terms as Mr. Ozorio.
Failing, however, to obtain an increase of salary, she
resigned on the 30th. of November,

I then decided that, as it was in-
possible to obtain the services of a capable clerk at
the low rate of salary hitherto offered, and as it was
also impossible to maintain the efficiency of the Colo-
nial Secretary's Department unless such a clerk was en-
gaged without undue loss of time, the post of temporary
clerk should be given to Mr. M. E. Asger, the only suit-
able candidate attracted by an advertisement in the local
press, with a salary of $100 a month rising by annual
increments of $120 to $1,800 per annum. I have now the
honour to request your sanction for that rate of pay.
Mr. Asger was appointed on the 8th.

of last December, and three days later Mr. J. M. Gutier-
rez was transferred, as I have already reported, from
his post of 2nd. clerk in the Colonial Secretary's Office
to the post of 2nd. clerk in the Magistracy. A vacancy
being thus created, I appointed Mr. F. M. Roza Remedios
