sir,

I have the honour to enclose for your informa-

tion copies of a minute by the Chief Justice in answer to an

enquiry from me and of the report of a Committee of the Legis-

lative Council appointed by me to consider the question of the

Land Office.

al: 1.

19-3-1901.

2. On the 14th. January it was stated in Legis-

lative Council that there was great delay experienced in get-

ting deeds registered in the Land Office.I asked for an ex-

planation, which I forwarded to the Chief Justice with a re-

quest that he would give me his views upon the subject. In ac-

cordance with his recommendation I appointed a Committe con-

sisting of Mr.Pollock, K. C., who is about to act for the Attor-

ney General during the absence of the latter on leave, the Co-

lonial Treasurer, and Dr. Ho Kai, a member of Council.

3. The recommendation of the Committee to se-

parate the Land Office from the Supreme Court Office involves

no practical change, as the nominal Land Officer has nothing

whatever to do with the Land Office which is entirely managed

by the Deputy Land Officer, his minutes being signed by the

The Right Honourable

Registrar
