Colonial Secretary's Office,

Hongkong, 27th. February, 1901.

theek ***

In reply to your letter of the 14th. instant, I as directed by His Excellency the Governor to inform you that the Government is anxious to ascertain the wishes of Medical Gentlemen and those interested in the question of private nursing in this Colony.

2:

With regard to the first resolution mentioned in your letter, His Excellency is of opinion that the Nursing Institution would be more satisfactorily carried out by a private Committee and with the aid of a guarantee fund, as is done in other Colonies with success. But, if the desire is that the Government shall obtain a supply of Nurses, it is hoped that the scheme of training European or Eurasian natives, of this Colony or of other Eastern Ports, for private nursing may ultimately result in furnishing a regular supply of Nurses and in effecting a con- siderable saving of public funda. I attach a copy of a report of the Acting Principal Civil Medical Officer showing what work has already been done in this respect.

3.

In reply to question B of your letter,

I am directed to inform you that the approximate annual expenditure

in maintaining the two Nurses in question has been $4,540.28.

4.

The annual receipts in fees earned by the

two private Nurses has been $1,423, 19.

5.

With regard to question D, I an informed by the Honorary Secretary to the Jubilee Committee that the amount available from the Jubilee Hospital Fund may perhaps amount to $2,000.

Dr. Stedman,

I have eta.,

(Sd.) J. B. Stenart-Lockhart,

Colonial Secretary.
