Hongkong, 16th. February, 1901,

I have the honour to state for the

information of His Excellency the Governor that I have

been instructed by the Inspector General of Customs to

surrender Waglan Island and its Lighthouse on the demand

of the Hongkong Goverment and at the same time to claim

refund of the cost of the Lighthouse, and of its mainte-

nance from the date when the British Flag was hoisted

on the territory leased by the terms of the Convention

of the 9th, June, 1898.

I understand your despatch No.2272

of the 14th. December, 1900, to be a such demand, and

I have accordingly prepared, and beg to forward herewith

for presentation to His Excellency particulars.of a stat e-

ment of the claim above mentioned, divided under three

heads, the amount due to each, being as follows.-

1. Cost of Tower, Lantern and

Apparatus...

2. Cost of Dwellings, Outhouses,

Fogsignalling platform, Landing place and gear..

3. Maintenance expenditure from

17th. April,1899, to 28th. February, 1901,.
