to say what the work is going to cost, but exclusive

of iron work, piping &c., imported from England, it is pretty sure not to fall short of $300,000. The payment on this to the Engineers would be, at 61%,

If the other proposal contained in

my letter of the 29th. January, No.84, was adopted and

a special Engineer obtained through Mr. Chadwick from

England, I estimate that the cost of the Engineering

of the scheme would be as follows.-

Passage from England of Engineer.

3 years salary at $7,200.

Local Travelling allowance to Officer

while if the work extended over three years, which is

quite possible, the expense would be proportionately

increased.

I am,

therefore, strongly in favour

of entrusting the work to Messrs. Denison and Ram. Govern-

ment will then secure the services of a very capable

Engineer in the person of Mr. Gibbs with 11 years expe-

rience in the Colony and intimate knowledge of Chinese

Contractors and the local prices of work.

It is proposed (C.0.D.350/1900) to

get a European Overseer from Eng and to reside at the

work
