charge of the staff of the Public Works Department. The
salary of the Engineer to be charged against the votes
for the work.

It should be left to Mr. Chadwick
to fix the salary, and I think it probable a capable
man could not be got for less than $500 to $600 a month,
without compensation, and with passage paid out, and
home at conclusion of engagement.

An alternative would be to entrust
the work to a firm of local Engineers, and I would have
complete confidence in Mr. Gibbs of Messrs. Denison and
Ram. Their commission would probably not come to more
than the salary of a special Engineer, and the cost of
passage out and home would be saved while this proposal
would ensure the work being in the hands of a very
capable Engineer of 11 years experience in the Colony.
