charge of the staff of the Public Works Department. The

salary of the Engineer to be charged against the votes

for the work.

It should be left to Mr. Chadwick

to fix the salary, and I think it probable a capable

man could not be got for less than $500 to $600 a month,

without compensation, and with passage paid out, and

home at conclusion of engagement.

An alternative would be to entrust

the work to a firm of local Engineers, and I would have

complete confidence in Mr. Gibbs of Messrs. Denison and

Ram. Their commission would probably not come to more

than the salary of a special Engineer, and the cost of

passage out and home would be saved while this proposal

would ensure the work being in the hands of a very

capable Engineer of 11 years experience in the Colony.

I have etc.,

(sa.) R. D. Ormsby,

Director of Public Works.
