-out that Empire, in Government Service and in private

practice, each of them exerting a powerful influence

towards the eradication of the old superstitions and the

spread of sound sanitation and true medical knowledge.

Even in Great Britain itself large

annual grants are made by Her Majesty's Government to

many,

if not most, of the Universities and Medical Col-

leges for the promotion of their work. Substantial aid

is at present being given to Tropical Medical Research,

and to Institutions preparing men for the same; and of

Institutions with a wider basis, to take extreme instances,

the very ancient Scottish Universities and the very

recent University of South Wales are alike heavily

subsidized,

That the Court of the College of

Medicine for Chinese, therefore, should ask the Govern-

ment of this Colony to aid by the annual grant suggested

an Institution that has during twelve long years been

patiently seeking to prove its right to exist, in face

of many obstacles and much discouragement, by actually

turning out efficient Medical men, certified as fit

for the practice of their profession by competent inde-

pendent examiners, usually including the heads of the

Military and Naval Medical Services for the time being

in the Colony, that the Court should make such request,

and thata favourable reply should be forthcoming, is,

it is submitted, entirely in accord with British policy
