Of the twelve Licentiates three

are in the Perak Government Service; three are in privat e

practice in Singapore; one has just had an offer of an

appointment with a commencing salary of $150 from the

Singapore Government; one is the somewhat notorious

Sun Yat Sen, the Chinese Reformer; one was for some years

in the Chinese Goverment Service, and recently returned

to Hongkong, where he has been doing plague inspection

among the employees of two of the leading firms of the

Colony; one is House Surgeon of the Nethersole Hospital;

one died of plague a year or two ago, while House Surgeon

of the Alice Memorial Hospital; and one was appointed

by His Excellency in April of last year to be Chinese

Medical Officer in the New Territory, where, the Court

understand, he has given satisfaction in the discharge

of the duties required of him.

There is a continuous demand from

the Straits Settlements for the diplomates of the College

which is evidence of the value attaching to their services

where their work has had time to be well tested.

For years the gentlemen through

whose self-sacrificing efforts the work of the College

has thus far been carried on were buoyed up by the hope

that they would ere long see it firmly established in

a home of its own, with the beginnings of a permanent

endowment and a permanent staff; but that hope fell to

the ground when eventually the inability of the Govern-

-ment
