John Chun Wong was sunmoded into the Council Chaaber: the Attorney-General read the first charge against him, vix:- that ba, Jona Chan Fong, în November, 1999, being a clerk in the band Office, had received from bau Pak Kun a Chinese Lease of band in the New Territory for magistration: that be took this lease out of the band Office: caused it to be trans- lated: and on the 31st. November 1999, procured the preparation and registration of a memorial of the lease, which was verified by the oath of his son Joseph Morlan Wong, and registered at the Land Office as feaorial No.38444:that for these services be de- manded a fee of $30, whereas the fee properly payable was 35 for registration and 75 cents ad valores stamp duty.
Witness Lau Tak Kün was examined by the Members of Council and cross-exaained by John Chun Wongi He stated that he had land dear Ngau Shi Jan: that being ignorant of the oustons, he went to the band Office to make enquiries about his title to this land: that at the band Office he set John Chua Tong; that Wong asked if he had a previous deed, advising hin, if be bad, to bring it to be registered, saying that the probable cost (all included) would be $30 that therefore next marniag between 7 - 8 a.a. he had taken his Chinese Lease to the band Office, but, fiading the Office shut, decided to go to John Chun Wong's family house: that, is arder to find the way there, he weat to see a autual acquaintance Chan Pak Tai, who sent a servant girl with his to show bia the way: that Chan Pak fai had for 3 or 3 years been his partner in businesst that he addressed him as "Mai 3huk" (uncle) that he saw him often; but had not till then spoken to him about the registration of the deed: that Wai told him that Wong would be able to put the matter through for hia: that, on going to Wong's house, be first saw John Chun Wong and asked his to translate the dead into English that Wong said he had no time; that he said a lawyer would be ascessary, as the translation would require a lawyer's signature: that he bau had said that he knew no lawyers and did not wish to employ ome: that the money was paid to the ao at the desk in the band Office: that he then call- ed ia bis son: that the son, in his father's presence, agreed to do what was required: that the fee of $30 was simply for trans- lation: that no force was used: that he was asked to pay the money as a favour: that be was willing to give it: that the charge
