With reference to your Despatch No.305 of

the 7th. September,- 1900, approving the proposal contained in

my Despatch No. 342 of the ist. of last August that the per-

sonal allowance of str. J. G. Wong, Clerk in the Land Office,

should be raised to $400 a year from the 1st. instant, I have

now the honour to inform you that, as very grave charges have

recently been proved against Mr. Wong, it has been advised in

Executive Council that he should be required to serve at a

reduced rate of salary for a period of 2 years, and that I

have accordingly decided that the extra emolument, which he

receives as personal lowance should not be granted to him

for a period of 2 years from the 1st. January, 1901, and that

his salary during that time should be at the rate of $750

without any personal allowance.

mision I trans-

mit to you copies of the following documents, viz:- the 4

-charges drawn up against Mr. Wong by the At orney General, Mr.

Wong's reply to these charges, the evidence given at the trial

of Mr. Wong in Executive Council' on the 10th. ultimo, and the

letter of the Colonial Secretary to Mr. Wong (No.115 of the

17th, instant) embodying the decision arrived at by Executive

Council on the 14th. instant.

The charge proved against Mr. Wong is that

in or about the month of March, 1900, he being a clerk in the

Land Office, received from Li Tung a fee of $80.50 for procu-
