Enclosure.

· Referring to 0.5.0. (Extension) I have the

honour to represent that an agreement of some sort seems desirable

between the Government on the one part and Mr. B."¿Grey" on the

other.

)

2. Mr. Grey is a thoroughly steady young man

of exceptionally strong physique, and a good surveyor, such men

can often secure well paid employment in the Best, and I think

Government would do well in ensuring Mr. Grey's continuance in the

Department for at least three years, while I think he on his part

wuold be glad to feel certain of employment for some time to come.

3.' I beg that His Exellency will be pleased

also to re-consider the question of allowing Mr.Grey compensation.

It is granted to all the new officers and overseers sent out from

home lately on 3-、 year engagements. Owing to the increase in

rents and cost of living, there is no doubt that a salaryfr $200

a month for a married English gentlemen, with children to keep,

is insufficient.

4. I propose from the ist. January that

Mr. Grey should live in Kowloon and look after all work over there

very imperfectly, supervised hitherto owing to shortness of staff.

There will, in addition to the ordinary maintenance work next year

be a great deal to do in making new streets and roads, and a:

Buropean officer on the spot to supervise and measure the contract

ors work is most desirable.

5. I anner the draft of an agreement drayn' |

up by the Crown Solicitor when Mr.Pictor Davis was employed,

altered to suit the present case and beg for authority to enter

The Honourable

into

The Colmial Secretary.
