Local Auditor, Hong Kong, to the Comptroller and Auditor General.

9/1900.
A 4/1900.
Audit Office,
Hong Kong, 17th Feb 1900.
Sirt-
I have the honour to forward for your information
copies of despatches relative to the salaries of officers
in the Government Service here.
2.
You will observe that the members of the Hong Kong
Civil Service signed a memorial to the Secretary of State
pointing out the inadequacy of their salaries, and after a
considerable amount of correspondence the result was, as is
shown in the Secretary of State's de patch of 8th December
1899, that nearly all the senior officers in the Service
here have been granted an increase of salary.
3. The considerations put forward in the memorial
above-mentioned apply to me as much as to any other member
of the Service.
4.
Rule 15 of the Colonial Audit Regulations states
that "European Officers of the Local Audit Establishments
"will be granted such privileges and status as are enjoyed
"by European Officers according to the Regulations in force
"for Colonial Officers in the several Colonies"
5. Properly I am a Colonial Officer attached for the
present to the Colonial Audit Branch of the Exchequer and
Audit Department,
6.
My pensionable salary in Cyprus was £500, and had
been so since 1887 and I was a member of the Legislative
Council.
