An
Sir:-
Eat 20 MAR 00
I am directed by the Comptroller and Auditor General
to transmit to you, for submission to the Secretary of
State, a copy of a letter received from Mr Nicolle, the
Local Auditor of Hong Kong, asking that his present rate of
pay may be reconsidered, and that he may receive the same
treatment as the other officials in the Colony whose
salaries have been increased by the Secretary of State's
despatch to the Governor, No 280, of 8th December last.
2. In forwarding Mr Nicolle's application for the
favourable consideration of Mr Secretary Chamberlain, I am
to state that, in view of his long and very efficient
service, the Comptroller and Auditor General is of opinion
that Mr Nicolle is fairly entitled to some increase in his
remuneration. He accordingly recommends that he may be
placed on the same footing as regards salary as the officers
mentioned in paragraph 4 (b) of the despatch referred to,
who, it is seen, have been assigned a scale of salary, to
take effect from 1st January last, of $4,800 rising to
$5,400 by triennial increments of $300.
3. Should the Secretary of State concur in this
arrangement, the Comptroller and Auditor General would
further recommend that the increased rate of pay for the
Local Auditor be considered personal to Mr Nicolle, and
that the salary assigned to the post should be subject to
reconsideration in the event of a vacancy occurring. Under Secretary of State,
COLONIAL OFFICE.
