he Comptroller and Auditor General, to the Local Auditor, Hong Kong.

1/42.

Exchequer & Audit Department,

6th March, 1900.

Sir:-

(c+a.92/1900)

of

I am directed by the Comptroller and Auditor Genera to acknowledge the receipt of your letter, No 7/1900, 23rd January last, applying, at the request of the Treasurer of the Colony, to be allowed to act in his place

during the time he is on leave of absence.

2.

In reply I am to acquaint you that the Secretary

of State has ruled in previous cases that it is contrary

to sound principle that a local Auditor should be in any

way concerned with executive or administrative duties in a Colony. The Comptroller and Auditor General entirely

concurs in this view and is therefore unable to sanction

your acting as Treasurer.

3.

A telegram, "Apropos"; i.e., "proposals not "approved", was despatched to you on the 28th ultimo.

I have &c.,

(Signed) JW.Gullick..
