With reference to Sir P.Yowutt's letter of the
6th December last, No.10058/99, on the subject of the
report of the inter-departmental Conference on the
provision of Sites for Kilitary purposes in Hong Kong,
I un directed by the Secretary of State for War to
acquainɛ jou that it has been strongly represented to
him that, in view of efficiency, it is very desirable
to reconsider the question of the Military Contribution
paid by that felony.
At present the Colony contributes to the
cost of its defence
1. A contribution of 17 of its revenue towards
the up-keep of troops, etc. and
2. A contribution or 1/3rd the cost of certain
now barrack services; and the Home Government considers
that it has also a claim on the Colonial Government
(a) in respect of certain barrack services
found necessary since the original programme was passod and
(h) in respect of new defence works exclusive
of arruusent, provided by the Imperial Government.
