October 15th, 1900.

The Marquess of Salisbury has had under his con-
sideration the question referred to in your letter of
August 18th respecting the publication of a new map of
Hongkong and the neighbouring territories, and the
difficulty that has arisen in connection with the
western boundary of the territory leased under the
Convention with China of June 9th, 1898.
I am to observe that in the negotiations which
preceded the conclusion of that Convention the meri-
dlan 1139 52 E. was proposed by Her Majesty's Govern-
ment and accepted by the Tsungli-Yamên as the Western
boundary without reference to the question of its
meeting the westernmost point on the foreshore of Deep
Bay. Lord Salisbury therefore agrees with Mr. Secre-
tary Chamberlain that it is desirable to adhere to
this meridian as the boundary, and that the prepara-
tion
