Mr. Herbert to the Marquess of Salisbury.-(Received September 24.)
(No. 465.) My Lord,
Paris, September 22, 1900. IT is reported in to-day's papers that a telegram, dated the 20th instant, has been received from the French Consul at Canton to the effect that disturbances have broken out at Soun-tao, near Canton; several villages have been destroyed, and others are invested. The missionaries have made their escape. The troops at first sent by the Viceroy having proved too weak to suppress the disturbances, the Consular Corps pressed strongly for the dispatch of a stronger force. This will be accompanied by the Chancelier of the French Consulate and the French gun-boat "Avalanche."
I have, &c.
(Signed) MICHAEL H. HERBERT.
