despatch of the 9th ultimo, of which a copy was
inclosed in your letter of the 10th ultimo .
The hope is expressed by the Admiralty that the
steps taken with the assistance of L1 Hung Chang may
be found effectual in putting an end to the present
state of disorder on the river, but this Department
is without information as to any action that may
have been agreed upon between the British and Chinese
Authorities for the purpose.
