Mint, the full indent could be executed within the date stipulated by the Colony, viz, the 2nd February, and we have
been definitively informed by the Deputy Master that he
is unable to undertake any coinages on behalf of the Colony
during the present year.
In these circumstances there is no alternative
but to employ the Birmingham Mint for the whole coinage and
th July /00 I enclose a copy of their last letter in which they offer
to make arrangements to deliver $350,000 fortnightly if further orders making a total up to $4,000,000 or $5,000,000
be entrusted to them at once.
The charge for manufacturing the coin will be
3 on the nominal value reckoning the dollar at 4/- with a discount of 24 on the amount of each Invoice, which are
the best terms we have been able to secure.
The placing of the order as desired by the Birmingham Mint will, however, of course involve the imme- diate purchase of large quantities of silver and as
the can-
cellation of the order, if subsequently desired at any time
!
by the Colonial Government, would be difficult if not impos- sible, we think it better to ask the authority of the Secretary of State before finally concluding the matter.
I have the honour to be,
Sir,
Your Obedient Servant,
