promise to catch the man who threw the stones and have him bambooed on that spot, and further that they were to put

up a placard on the house stating that he had been punished for stoning a British gunboat. Failing the capture

of the man the owner of the house was to be held as

hostage. This was agreed to, and I returned to Kumchuk for

the night.

I omitted to state that more stones were thrown

while the Mandarin was on board in the morning, and that

he had to admit that they were not thrown by children

their usual excuse,

Soldiers will have to be sent to Luklao to

apprehend the men who fired on the LungKlang as the

Mandarin has only twenty Yamen runners, and the Icoal

gentry will not move in the matter till the safety of

themselves and their property is guaranteed against the

"evenge of the mob.

8. I propose leaving for Lurlac this afternoon also visiting Sui Hoi and Lung Kiang in the Brickkiln

creek. There has been trouble with native Christians at

both these places and the "Avalanche" is reported to be

somewhere there.
