Sir,
I have the honour to report that the Master of
S.S.LungXiang reports the following :-
On 24th September while making customary trip from Canton to Wuchau, via Luklao, and while passing that place he was stoned, and at the centre of the town 6 shots were fired one of which took effect on a Chinaman hitting
him on the foot. The French Gunboat "Avalanche" was at
w anchor at the entrance to Brickkiln creek, and the Captain and Surgeon boarded the Lungkiang and dressed the wounded man. The Captain of the "Avalanche" with a French Missionary then went to interview the local Mandarin.
Mr John A. Rule of Imperial Maritime Customs, Samshud,
was on board and was hit by a stone,
2.
This was an organised affair as is proved by the fact that the men lining the banks had iles of stones
ready gathered.
3.
On receipt of this report Lieut.& Commander Carr wired to Britannia Canton for "Robin" stating the fact that LungKiang was fired on. The following telegram was sent back by Lieut.& Commr.Walker. "Robin" left for Samshui. Consul says gunboats need not interfere he will arrange also from Consul General Scott to Consul Little
bell LungKlang not to go by Luklao on her way back.
