execution took place outside the fort on the River Bank.

Being unable to obtain any information, on Sunday 29th I called on the Mandarin at the Fort, taking Lieutenant & Commander Forbes Sempill with me, also an interpreter from this ship. The Mandarin was most friendly, and our reception everything that it should be. He returned my call on Sunday afternoon. I obtained the following information from him.

The man executed on Friday was from Sailam Channel and one of the men who fired on the "Chang Sha" for whom $500 had been offered. The Mandarins have orders to use every endeavour to suppress piracy, and the mumber of soldiers in the district has been largely increased. Four other pirates had already been executed at this place and he then had other prisoners whose cases had not been investigated. Four more executions took place this morning, making a total of nine for this place during the last fortnight. The Mandarin informed me that he had reasons to believe that there were pirates taking passage in the British steamers on the river, and that he had men in Hong Kong getting information.

I pointed out to him the difficulty I had of obtaining information, and told him if, when he obtained

any,

he informed me, I would what I could to assist him. Before leaving, he promised to let me know any information concerning pirates that he obtained, and he has since informed me of one or two things.
