Sir,

RECE
&
Reo 29 JAN OF
Police Office.,
Hongkong 10th December1900
4
I have the honour to address you on
the subject of the increase of salary granted to me under
0.0. despatch No 280′ of the 8th December 1899,
I did not make any representation
in this matter when other officers did as I was acting at
the time as Colonial Secretary, and I did not wish to
appear to take advantage of that circumstance to forward
my personal interests.
Under the despatch in question the
increase of salary granted to me is only $240. per arnum--
the smallest increase accruing to any Head of Department,
and I shall not attain my first increment till 1st Janu-
ary 1905 nor my naximum till three years after that.
Seeing that in February next I
shall complete seven years' service as Captain Superin-
· tendent of Police I submit that my case is deserving of
consideration. I would ask that I be allowed to begin to
draw my first increment on the 1st of January 1908,
I need hardly point out that $240.
per annum does not compensate me in any appreciable
...degree for the increased cost of living that has been
steadily growing since 1894.
I have, etc.,
(Sa) F. H. MAY,,
10. S. P.,
THE HONOURABLE
THE COLONIAL SECRETARY.,
