The rapid increase in
House rent in Hongkong makes the subject a very important one for the Civil servants of this Colony, and I may point out that while Mr Lockhart has for some years performed the duties of Registrar General without any greater expense than that of allowance for chair coolies, the subtraction of that amount, which he will no longer draw, from the salary as at present authorised shows the actual increase of his salary to be but $720 while the duties of the office have been considerably added to by the
acquisition of the New Territory.
