O
195
have doubtless been reported to the Foreign Office
& the Admiralty. The British Steamer Lungkiang
when proceeding through a channel connecting the
Pearl & West Rivers was fired upon when passing
Luklao, & one of her crew was wounded. 1.M.S. Robin
was prepared to escort her back by the same channel
but the Consul at Canton telegraphed that she
must not return by that route, 1. M. S.Robin on
proceeding to Luklao had stones thrown at her from
the Bank. No steps appear to have been taken to
secure immediate punishment, & such incidents are
not calculated to maintain the prestige of
Great Britain in the Canton district.
I have the honour to be
Sir
Your most obedient
humble servant
