5. Assuming that silting takes

place opposite the portion of the Praya west of the dock- yard extension, in consequence of the deflection of the

Nullah, the Naval Authorities are palpably responsible

for the damage, and it is their duty to prevent it by

dredging if necessary. Nor can the Naval Authorities complain of their treatment by this Colony in the matter of the dock yard extension. The amount of foreshore hand -- ed over to her Majesty's Navy free of charge is 1,752,785. square feet in a very valuable part of the Town, and the estimated value of the premium that could be obtained for this area is $1.50 per square foot, or a sum of $2,599,177. 50fa not inconsiderable sun.' That in addition to this grant the Colony should be obliged to undertake the ad- ditional expense of dredging, in consequence of the dock- yard Extension interference with the present Nullah, would

be clearly unjust.

I have the honour to be,

Sir,

Your most obedient,

Humble servant,

Huery Mahe
