Sir,
1.
Referring to C.S.0. 562/1900,
I have the honour to forward a letter from Messrs. Butter-
field and Swire applying for a further extension of the
land recently purchased by them, amounting to 527,400 squ-
are feet or a little over 12ğacres.
2.
On the annexed tracing the land
now asked for is shown soloured red.
5.
After an inspection of the ground
I am of opinion that this new proposal for the diversion
of the road is an improvement on the former one; it pro-
vides for a more direct road, much of it level, and the
remainder on the easy gradient of 1 in 30. Owing to 8
gap in the hills, it will be easier of construction then
the road originally proposed.
4.
The extra area now asked for is
extremely rough ground, consisting for a great part of
worked-out quarry pits, Before it could be granted as an
extension, or put up for sale, arrangements would have to
be made with the villagers whose holdings are shown near
the South-East of the lot. I have ascertained that many
of these people have been dealt with by the squatters
Board and are now in the possession of leases, "hile four
of them are still squatters. It would, therefore be ne-
cessary for Messrs. Butterfield and Swire to enter into
negotiation with them, and obtain their consent, on receiv-
ing compensation, to give up their holdings. There are 11
persons holding leases for 21 years, 7 holding leases for
999 years, and one holding a lease renewable annually.

I have to.
