Referring to my telegram of 31st May 1899 about Li
Long and you telegram of 2nd June 1899, to-day I have 7g-
ceived following message from head of the Basel Mission

Hong Kong *It is a fact that a great many
natives
Triad Societies men aro
speak of 10,000 more
assembled at and near to village called San Chu Then situ-
ated not far from Sang Ts Chung and that they have inton-
tion to rise in rebellion in a short time; it is asserted
by some natives who were there that three Biropeans and
two Japanese are assisting the rebels. Some weeks ago
Chinese Goverment surrounded the locality where those
rebels are with four Jumps soldiers but until now the
soldiers have not dispersed them Our mission station 8
at hi long, Chang Hang, Kang Long How are in danger to
be pillaged if not burns down. At 21 Long there are at
present four Buropean male Missionaries who have intention

ful if you will kindly let me know if the Government has
the intention to do something for the safety of our Mia-
sionarues and Mission stitions". I have comamicated copy
of above to the British Consul at Canton. I can if Her
Majesty's Government do not disapprove move forse to the
Northern boundary of our territory and from there establish
daily communication to Li Tong about aevan miles distent
this is only way in which I can afford prastival proteo-
tion
