Sir,

I have to acknowledge the receipt

of your despatch No.250 of 20th. July, 1900, approving of

the addition of one additional clerk for Mail sorting and

of two additional stampers.

2. The Acting Postmaster General

points out that there are at present 3 Marine Officers

and that each Marine Officer requires one Assistant and

two stampers, Paragraph 8 of Captain iïastings* letter of

13th.November enclosed in my despatch 355 of 8th. December

shows that three Marine Officers were necessary. Had

the recommendations embodied in that despatch been ap-

proved, two of the Clerks then asked for would have been

used as Marine Assistant Sorters and "hen not so employ-

ed would have been utilised in the general work of the

office. This is the explanation given by the Postmaster

General. It may be well to ask Captain Hastings if that

was what he intended.

3. As those recommendations heve

not been approved I have the honour now to request that

authority be given for the appointment of two additional

Clerks for Mail sorting.

I have the honour to be,

The Right lionourable,
