of my despatch above mentioned, I have now the honour
to inform you that a suitable candidate has been
found to fill the post of Senior Clerk in the person
of Mr. John Charles Kaye, an Englishman, who has been re-
sident in Shanghai for about 11 months, employed as an
Assistant in a Itapery Store. His testimonials are sat-
isfactory, and I recommend his appointment on a salary
of $1440 rising to $1920 by $240 triennially, with ex-
change compensation, on condition,

finding security for $4000.
