some extent counterbalanced by the fact that the Crown

Solicitor is not entitled to any pension on retirement

from Government Service.

16.

The Crown Solicitor unlike most Government Officials is obliged to provide and pay for a substitute during any absence from the Colony on

leave, as there is no officer in the Government service

qualified to relieve him- this robs the leave allow-

ance of a large part of its advantages.

17. On the grounds above stated I

have the honour to request that my salary may be in- creased, and would beg leave to suggest that a salary of $4800 per annum (and exchange compensation) would

be a more equitable remuneration for the work of my

office, and that in addition to this I should be allowed

to charge the Government costs on a reduced scale (say half the authorised scale) for all legal work carried out in defending civil actions brought against the Government by way of Petition of Right &C.,
