sir,
I have the honour to make the follow-
ing application for submission to His Excellency The Governor for an increase in the salary attached to the office of Crown Solicitor.
2. This office was not included in the recent despatch of the Secretary of State in which in- creases of the salaries of nearly all the higher offic ers of the Civil Service in the Colony were sanctioned, and I understand that the Commission recently appoint- ed to deal with the salaries of Subordinate Officials has no power to deal with my salary. It is therefore necessary for me to approach His Excellency direct on the subject.
3. The present salary of the office is $3,240.per annum with usual exchange compensation, and the officer also enjoys the right to carry on private practice, in the office provided him by the Government. Only one clerk is provided by the Government, and I have frequently had to employ the services of a Chinese In- terpreter (engaged and paid by my firm of Dennys & Bo- ley) in getting up evidence in Crown cases.
4. The salary was, I believe fixed at
its present sum in 1890.
5. The grounds upon which I base my
application are four fold viz:-
