sir,

With reference to paragraph 3 of your

despatch No.209 of the 20th June, I have the honour to inform you tiret I propose to insert a vote in the Es- timates for 1901 to cover increased expenditure under the Interpretation scheme.

When the new Interpretation Depart-

ment is constituted, interpreters throughout the service will be examined, and such of them as setisfy the exam- iners will be classified according to their merits. It is possible that some may not be considered efficient enough to be classed under the scheme, and the salaries of Interpreters will have to be adjusted gradually.

2. With regard to paragraph 6 of your despatch, I an addressing you on a case which has been brought to my notice in the Gaol department. So far as

I am aware there are no other such cases.

I have the honour to be,

sir,

Your most obedient

Humble servant,
