Sir,

Colonial Secretess office,
Singapore, 12th. July, 1900.
I am directed to acknowledge the re-
ceipt of your letter No.1178 of the 29th, June, and to thank you for the information therein given.
As regards the last paragraph I am
to observe that the information given to this Govern- ment was as follo7s:-
(a) That a lascar died, 29th.May, at sea from suspected plague:
(b) That he was seen by the Health Officer, Hongkong, 25th or 26th.May:
(c) That he had been ill since 25rd.May.
Dr. Jordan states that every soul on board was seen by the Health Officer or Deputy Health
Officer.
This established the truth of state-
ment (b).
Statements (a) and()c) are not within Dr.Jordan's know- leage but that does not effect their accuracy.
It seems that the man who died on
the 29th had, to the knowledge of those on board the
vessel, been ailing from the 23rd. but the Health DE- partment in HongKong failed to diagnose the case as one
of plague, or perhaps as one of illness at all.
The ionourable,
The Colonial Secretary
HongKong.
