4. The question of procuring the ne-
cessary accommodation has received careful considera-
in a suitable tion, and, in the absence of Crom land locality in the city, the best solution seems to be
that a row of 5 Chinese houses of 3 stories each
shown in the enclosed tracing be resumed and converted into quarters for 6 Sergeants of Police and 4 Assist-
ant Warders. Accommodation can be hereafter arranged at some of the other Police Stations for quarters for the remaining 5 Indian Sergeants if they are required.
5.The block of houses in question
stands immediately, North of the Compound at the Central Police Station upon which the back windows of the
houses look out. The houses are fairly new and in
good order and world require little alteration to matc the 2nd and 3rd.floors of each suitable as seperete
married quarters. Of the ground floors (five) it is
proposed to use two for the present as a store for
Confiscated property to relieve the great pressure on
the store eccommodation in the Police Department,
caused by the large increase in the Force, and to let
the other three. At present they let for $11 a month
and there would no. difficulty in obtaining that rent-
el for them. These ground floors are not considered
suitable for living quarters,
6. The owner of the block of houses
which it is desired to acquire, asks $40.000 for the
property, which comprises an area of 4000 square feet.
I consider however that if this property were resumed
the compensation awarded to the owner, would not be
likely
