Government House,

th

Hongkong, August, 1900.

With reference

to the concluding

portion of your despatch No.238 of the 3rd.of October

1895, I have the honour to subait for your favourable

consideration the following scheme for providing mer-

ried quarters for 6. Indien Sergeants of Police, and

also for 4 Assistant Werders in the Gaol Department.

2. I enclose copy of a Memorial ad-

dressed to you by the Indian Members of the Geol Staff

in which they pray for an increase of pay, the privi-

loge of renittalice to India at en enhanced rate of ex-

chenge, and for free quarters to the married members of

the staff. Increases of the seleries of the Indian

staff at the Gaol having been granted, and the crivi-

lege of Faniiy remittances refused as recently as

last year, I do not consider that those questions

shouldhow be re-opened, but I am of opinion that mast-

ried quarters should be provided for four Assistant

Werders.

3.The Indian Sergeant Major is

given a house allowance in lieu of married quarters.

I am of opinion that that arrangement may be continued
