I have the honour to ask that the follow-
ing report on the staff of the British Post ffice,Shang-
hai and recommendations for increases, may be forwarded
to the Government for early submission to the Secretary
of State.

The staff (cneluding the Chinese) con-
siste of the Postmaster, Senior Clerk and 2 other clerks.
The Postmaster has charge of the Department, keeps the
: accounts,receives Contract mails, despatches Contract
mails, assists in sorting, looks after registered let-
ters and parcels in Poste Restante unclaimed or deed
letters, supervises closing of Contractná¿ls ko.fo.ko.
The Chief Clerk has charge of Money
orderf work, deals with unpaid correspondence and makes
up boxholder's accounts, makes up parcel malls for the
United Kingdom”, closes registered mails, by contract
packets, deals with 'Town' portion of inward meils, clos-
es London and London. f'orward mails, prepares
ete.

The second clerk closes all mails, in-
cluding registered, for the ports, Japan and U.S.A.,85-
siste to close mails by Contract packets, sorts and as-
sists generally.

The third clerk gives a receipts
for registered letters and parcels received at the
window, taxes, sorts and assists generally.
