of India who produced good testimonials, and whom I have ap-

pointed on three months probation to be First Clerk at a sa-

lary of $100 per mensem.

If you approve of the creation of this new of-

fice I shall make a recommendation in due course as to how it

fice,

5. As explained in the End.paragraph of Major-

General Gascoigne's despatch No.227 of the 19th.of May last

Mr.Pereira, the Senior Clerk at the Shanghai Post Office, re-

signed on the 30th.of June, and on the 3rd, of July Mr.C.L.Per-

petuo, 2nd. Clerk, also resigned complaining that the work was

too hard for him.

6. In these circumstances I sent to Shanghai

Mr.Dalieto of the Hong-Kong Post Office to act as the First

(or extra) Clerk sanctioned provisionally by General Gascoigne

pending the engagement of a candidate, together with Mr. Dixon

the Superintendent of the Money Order Office in the Hong-Kong

Post Office, to assist in putting into order the Money Order

Office.
