With reference to paragraph 2 of Major-General Gascoigne's despatch No. 211 of the 11th. May, 1900, I have the

honour to report that the Acting Harbour Master has now sub-
mitted his Estimate for 1901 of the cost of the upkeep of
Waglan Lighthouse, which is to be taken over by the Colonial
Government on January 1st.of next year. I attach a copy of this Estimate, from which it will be seen that the estimate furnish- ed in the despatch above referred to is exceeded by $1,800. This is principally due to an increased Estimate for the sa- laries of the European light-keepers.

closed paper of particulars are the same as paid to the light- keepers at the Gap Rock, and I should mention that the Commit- tee recently appointed to enquire into the salaries of subor- dinate officers in the service have recommended that the pay
of the Gap Rock Light-keepers should be increased as follows:-
1. From $1620 to $1800.
