ON account of the troubles in Tientsin & Taku, Reports
came to us that the Boxers have killed many Kwangtung
people so that Cantonese at present in Tientsin. are
as if sitting on blankets full of pins. The day before
yesterday the Kwong Tsai Yi Yun & the Shung Ching
Shiu Tong (two charitable institutions in Canton)
received a letter from the Tung Wah Hospital stating
circumstances the same as we had actually heard.
The latter wanted these two institutions to provide
money to rescue these people in distress. On the
27th July a meeting of 72 guilds in Canton was
convened by the Kwong Tsai Yi Yun. We hear that nothing
short of $20000 will procure a ship to go to the
North. We hear that His Excellency the Governor of
Hongkong has assisted to the extent of $5000. The
Tung Wah hospital the same amount. The two Cantonese
institutions above named $2000 each, The matter will
shortly be carried out. This good action cannot be
surpased.
