I have luoked carefully through the
. Harbour Master's Report for 1899, and the only
· place in which I can find the figures
: 49,373 is under the heading of "total decrease
, in the passenger traffic, (by steamer) during 1
1899 as compared with 1898, (para 10).
The excess of passengers arriving, over
passengers departing will be found in
para.9 under heading "Trade of the port of
Hong Kong for the year ending December 31st, 1899, and will be found to be 15,718 Exclusive of the
Junks in local trade.
The estimate of populations for
the year 1899 was made by me and was calculated
from the Census Returns of 1891 and 1897 by
certain well established methods,
The excess of passengers arrivals over
departures is no guide for the calculations
or arr estimate of population, as it
ignores the larger amount of overland movements
of the population.
