We replied that the appointment of an Assist-
ant Superintendent of the faol must have relieved the
Captain Superintendent and Deputy Superintendent of some
work,
and that we could not therefore approve the
appointment of the additional Assistant Superintendent
för Victoria. One appointment for the New Territory was enough; it could be given to a Passed Cadet on $2,400
Mr Halifax's appointment was, we presumed, temporary,
as it had not been submitted.
The fovernor replied that two Assistant
Superintendents were required, but that it had not been
proposed to appoint an Assistant Superintendent for Victoria, nor one specially for the New Territory; asked for a Policeman from India, or that failing, that a cadet should be trained in an Indian police force. My Halifax was acting Assistant Police Magistrate, and supervising some stations in the New Territory.

We replied pointing out objections to obtaining
an officer from India; and suggesting that it would be enough for a cadet or two to learn Hindustani. nct Mr Halifax continue to do double duty as Assistant Magistrate and Assistant Superintendent of Police, without extra pay, as his duties were so light?

The Governor replied that he saw great force
in our objection to getting a man from India, Mr Hallifax coula go on with his duty fat $2700), but should go to Tahore for training and Hindustani as soon as he could be spared.

Assistant Superintendents of Police (one at $3,600,
one at $3,000); one of whom is stated in a footnote
to be for Victoria, one for the New Territory. It
will be seen that we have definitely refused to
appoint more than one of these, and Sir H.Blake

repudiated the division of duties between them thus
indicated.
