Sa-Shuipo Pier.

Estimater

I have the honour to report that duding a very low tide, last month, I bagpened to land at Sam-shuipo, and discovered that the timber pier there is in a very dangerous state. Between high and low water, the piles are almost completely gone with rot and the ravages of the teredo, in many cases the cross bracing has also gone and it is difficult to conceive how the plat- forn remains and continues to carry at times heavy weights. I since had it examined carefully by Mr. Madie and he fully confirms my opinion, that it is past repair, and considers it so unsafe that be

suggests a notice warning persons not to use it. He also submits

the accompanying plan and estimate for a new pier amounting to $3,113.90.

I am inclined to think this is an outside estinate and that by allowing the use of such of the platform timbers as are sound, a tender might be obtained for a less suo.

The pier is an important one and cannot I

think be dispensed with. I have the honour to ask if the necessary

funds can be provided this year and if I may lay the proposal

The Honourable

before

The Acting Colonial Secretary.
