be a question to consider whether they should be replaced by
other Nurses from home. It is possible that two probationers
who by that time will have completed their term of instructions
(which is 3 years) may be willing and qualified to take their
places.
I think it would be matter for regret if the
scheme of providing Nurses for private nursing were allowed
to fall through. Al though the engagement of these Nurses has
hitherto been a somewhat expensive experiment, their services
have alleviated much suffering and have been most useful at
the Government Civil Hospital to fill temporary vacancies
through leave or sickness of the Sisters there; and with the
institution of higher fees and the economy which will be ef-
fected in rent, furniture, attendance, &c., if they are housed
practically under one roof with the Sisters of the Government
Civil Hospital, their employment should wear a better financial
aspect hereafter,
I have the honour to be,
sir,
Your most obedient
Humble Servant,
M.J. Gascoigne
Major-General,
Administering the Government.
