Sir,
With referance to my despatch No.273 of the 8th.instant in which I informed you that I had provisionally appointed Mr.F.Howell to be Chief Clerk at the Post Office
on a probation of six months, I have the honour to report to you that Mr.Howell has since submitted the medical certi- ficate of which I attach a copy, testifying to his physical incapacity for a post which necessitates so much standing as that to which he had just been appointed.
2. In consideration of this circumstance, I have reinstated Mr.Howell in his former position as Head Bailiff in the Supreme Court, and have therefore to request you to consider as cancelled the recommendation contained in my despatch No.304 of the 28ud. June, 1900, that Mr. Brown, of the Sanitary Department, should be appointed to Mr.Howell's
place in the Supreme Court. Mr.Brown will also therefore
revert to his former position.
1.
With regard to the post of Chief Clerk in the
Post Office, I have now the honour to inform you that I have
provisionally and subject to your approval appointed Mr.G. G.Burnett, 2nd.Class Sanitary Inspector, to the vacancy in question, and as I understand that Mr. Burnett is a capable
officer and likely to be a satisfactory officer in the
: Postal Department, I ao not propose that he should be put
o probation before appointment.
THE RIGHT HONOURABLE
JOSEPH CHAMBERLAIN, M.P.,
