With reference to my despatch No.273 of the

8th. instant in which I recommended the appointment of Mr.
Howell, First Bailiff and Assistant Usher in the Department
of the Supreme Court, to be Chief Clerk in the Post Office on
6 months probation, I have now the honour to recommend, if
that appointment is approved, that Mr.Brown; 3rd.Class In-
spector of Nuisances, be appointed to fill the vacancy caused
by Mr.Howell's promotion, on a salary of $1,500 per annum.
Mr.Brown was only recently transferred to the >Sanitary Department,and previously held the post of 2nd.

· Bailiff in the Supreme Court. He is therefore acquainted

with the nature of the work which will be required of him,
, and in my opinion will make a suitable successor to Mr.Howell.
