Sir,

I have the honour to inform you that on

the suggestion of the Board of Examiners application was recently made to the Government of the Straits Settlements for payment to the Examiners in HongKong who conduct the examinations in Chinese of Cadets in the service of the Strait/ Settlements and Federated Malay States, of the same fees that

. are paid to Consular Officers in China who conduct similar

· examinations, and that the Government of the Straits Settle- ments? and. the Resident General of the Federated Malay State s have agreed to pay a fee of $50 for each cadet examined.

2. The Board of Examiners appoints from time

to time a Sub-Committee to conduct the examinations of Cadets and other examinees, and the present Sub-Committee consists of the two lay members of the Board Dr.Ho Kai and the Rev: T.W.Pearce- and the Secretary to the Board, Mr.A.W.Brewin, Inspector of Schools, and I have approved of a proposal made by the lay members of the Sub-Committee that the fees paid by the Governments of the Straits Settlements and the Feder- ated Malay States, should be divided among the members of the Sub-Committee in the proportion or to the Secretary and to the other members of the Sub-Committee present at the examination.

The Secretary will have charge of all the

written portions of the examinations and will therefore have

the most onerous task. RIGHT HONOURABLE
