Sir,
With reference to your despatch No.66 of
the 12th.March, 1900, I have the honour to inform you that in the recommendations made for a general increase or salaries of the European Police, no increase was by inadvertence set down for
: the Assistant Engineer in the Fire Brigade who was seconded
from the Police Force to that appointment and who was allowed
by your despatch No.86 of the 12th. May, 1899, to retain his Police privileges.
2. Mr.Robertson is therefore still a Sergeant
of Police, and as his position would be relatively less advanta- geous than it was if the pay of the post to which he has been
· seconded remained at its old figure, while the pay of the Po-
·lice has been increased, I have authorised an addition of 20% (the increase granted to the Police) being made to the salary of the Assistant Engineer in the Fire Brigade as from 1st. January, 1900, and I have to ask your sanction for my action.
3. At the same time Mr.Robertson has been required to contribute to the Widows and Orphans' Fund on his salary as Assistant Engineer.
HE RIGHT HONOURABLE
JOSEPH CHAMBERLAIN,M.P.,
