May, 1900.

Referring to my despatch No.149 of che

7sh.ultimo, I have the honour to inform you that the work

of the Survey for Rent Roll purposes has not progressed as was

as quickly

anticipated, partly owing to the reluctance of the villagers to assist the Surveyor with informacion and partly owing to the fact that as che Field Work of the Cadastral Survey is nou yet completed is has not been possible to obuain copies of each

block of that Survey on compleion for the use of the Rent Roll

Surveyor.

In these circumstances and in view of the

face that is is absolutely necessary to make a Rent Roll as

sonn as possible, I have engaged two additional Surveyors from the Royal Engineers who have been placed at my disposal by the Courtesy of the Commanding Royal Engineer to assist in the work, and have stationed them in two different districts in the

New Terriory to work under Messrs. Messer and Kemp who have hitherto been employed in registering claims to land.

2. I have auchorised remuneration at the rate of $2 a day wo be paid to each of these additional Sur-

veyors while they are in Civil employ, and I have to ask your : sanction for his expendi ure, which from the 1st.of June can

be met out of the lapsing salary of the Chief Chinese Assisart and Interpreter at Tai Po (shown under the Colonial Secretary's BIGHT HONOURABLE
